Have I mentioned that it is National Foster Care month? In our area alone there are as many as 100 children removed from their homes each month with 2,000 children in foster care at any given time. In addition there are nearly 100 children waiting for an adoptive home. Again this is just in our area, think of the need country-wide!

I believe scripture is very clear on what our role should be in the lives of these hurting children. James 1:27 says; A religion that is pure and stainless according to God the Father is this: to take care of orphans and widows who are suffering, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Psalms 68:5-6 Father to the fatherless, defender of widows — this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families.

We are blessed to be a part of an amazing church community with a big heart for foster care and adoption. There are many families already walking this out as well as a number of others just beginning the process. It fills my heart with joy thinking of the immeasurable impact we can make on hurting children and families!

If you are reading this post with a heart to help but an inability to take children into your home, there are plenty of ways for you to get involved. Local organizations who support foster and adoptive parents have various opportunities for you to give of your time or resources. You could transport foster children to and from visits, or provide respite care for parents. You could make a meal for a family, or hand down gently used clothing or equipment. You can send an encouraging note and most of all pray for the families who take someone else’s child into their home and Love them as their own for a little while or forever!
